Children and Youth Ministry at Edgewood
There are many ways our youngest Edgewoodians are nurtured by and engaged in the life of the church.
SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP
Edgewood has several Intergenerational services throughout the year where youth and children take lead roles in worship activities. At all times children and youth are welcome to participate in worship in a variety of ways – through special music, reading scripture, and participating in creative drama and skits.
GRADES K-5 CHURCH SCHOOL
Edgewood uses a workshop rotation model for church school. The children spend several weeks at a time exploring a particular spiritual theme and associated Bible story through various learning modalities or “workshops” including art, drama, cooking, crafts, body movement, and the study of contemporary heroes and current events. Each year about six or seven major spiritual themes/stories are introduced. The curriculum is designed to help our children connect with God in ways that speak to their life experiences.
GRADES 6-12 CHURCH SCHOOL
Our sixth through eighth grade students engage in a lively “Coming of Age” curriculumin in which they creatively explore their faith as it relates to their growing sense of who they are and how they connect to the world around them. Our ninth through twelfth grade students meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month during the church service to explore and discuss important faith issues and essential Biblical passages.
MICAH FELLOWSHIP--DO JUSTICE, LOVE KINDESS, WALK HUMBLY
On the second and fourth Sunday’s of the month from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. youth in grades 6-12 meet together for food, fun, fellowship, and topical discussion and activities. This lively group is led by the Youth Ministry Coordinator who is assisted by volunteers who like to have fun and are open to deeper conversations about our faith.
OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL)
Every other year, we offer a Comprehensive Human Sexuality Program called Our Whole Lives for youth in grades 10-12. This program is facilitated by specially trained and qualified volunteers. The program includes information and opportunities to learn together about sexuality, intimacy, sexual health and safety, sensuality, and sexualization. Each participant is given accurate information that allows each person to make wise decisions.
Youth in grades 6-12 gather each week following church school (11:30 – 12:15) to make music together. We work with everyone who desires to make a joyful noise. This includes a youth handbell choir and opportunities for– voice, a variety of instruments, and percussion. Recently we joined together for Dona Nobis Pacem featuring a cello trio, oboe, violins, trumpet, trombone, flutes and clarinets.
Edgewood camp, held in August is for all people. Special programs and activities are planned each day and evening for children and youth. Plenty of time together spent exploring faith issues, playing ultimate Frisbee, swimming in Lake Michigan, creating crafts, singing, silly skits, and hanging out with friend makes for a 5 day camp experience that strengthens relationships and nurtures our faith.
GREAT OUTDOOR RECREATION PROGRAM (GORP)
New this year! Active adults and energized youth grades 9-12 will gather for group outings of hiking, biking, backpacking, camping, canoeing and rockclimbing – we may even go white water rafting. Experiencing God in nature and fellowship will be our focus. We hope to build our skills to lead to a major expedition – maybe even to Isle Royale for a weeklong backpacking trip. This will be a monthly event.
