What We Believe

What We Believe

Mission Statement

Edgewood United Church, United Church of Christ, affirms that a loving and sustaining God is still speaking and creating.  Following the life, spirit and teaching of Jesus, we welcome all as we commit to do justice and love kindness and walk humbly with God.

Our Core Values and Beliefs are fluid and evolving based on the discernment of the entire congregation and the way god continues to speak and create among the Edgewood community. We believe:

Worship

Worship of God is central to the whole life of our faith community.  We believe in, worship, and serve God, who is loving, sustaining, creative, and transformative.

Progressive Biblical Christian Theology

Our faith tradition is over 2000 years old. Our thinking is contemporary.  We believe God is still speaking.

Radical Hospitality

No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Celebration of Inclusion and Diversity

We celebrate the rich diversity that God has created and seek to be a community of welcome, healing, hope, and hospitality for people of all nationalities, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, types of families, marital statuses, socio-economic statuses, ages, and abilities. We believe that the diversity of the world provides a key insight into the nature of God.

Spiritual and Intellectual Formation

Children, youth, and adults, we are all continually being formed more and more into who God is calling us to be.  We are empowered to serve God and follow Jesus by growing in knowledge, wisdom, and abilities, through the study of the Bible, Judaic-Christian traditions, history and theology, as well as contemporary social issues.

Questioning

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. The point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”   Rainer Maria Rilke

Social Justice

It is our calling to be co-creators with God of a world that is fair and equal for all. Compelled to action and willing to risk, we are following the path of Jesus of Nazareth. We are committed to advocacy and action on key issues that shape the human condition in our time and place.  We walk with, work with, and support others engaged in social justice issues.

Environment

In these days of climate change and increasing stress on the Earth, we recognize our oneness with all of God’s creation and our responsibility to do what we can to preserve it.

Compassion and Charity

We commit to lend our time, talents, and resources to support each other and to reach out to the most vulnerable people both within and outside of our community, through our ministries and missions.

Healing and Community

We acknowledge our frailties and pray for forgiveness of our failures. We seek to create a community of healing and solace, love, and mutual support.
